Algeria had reached the Quarter Finals in the last edition of the tournament and were hoping for at least a repeat here in Mali. El Khadra kicked off their campaign with the toughest fixture against Nigeria. An Aghahowa goal just before half-time decided the contest and the match finished in a 1-0 victory for the Super Eagles. Zafour played the full match in the defence. The side rescued a late draw with Liberia next time out but a 2-0 defeat to the hosts in their final group game so the side finish bottom of the group. Zafour represented his country 28 times between 1998-05. Algeria players wore two versions of this shirt in this match with some players shirts featuring the green mesh sides like Zafour's while for other players the mesh was white
